Chapter 12

Golem Knight

As I ran all over, searching for Hugo, I finally crashed into him at the staff room door. He had a cup of tea in his hand, some of which tipped onto the ground when we collided.

‘Oh dear. Didn’t expect to run into you like this.’ He did a quick clean-up spell (without a wand, the lucky duck), and then retreated back into the staff room to refill his teacup. No one else was in there, so I followed him in.

‘And how are you this morning, Annie?’ he enquired with a smile, while he added a spoonful of sugar.

‘How am I? Hugo, didn’t you hear me screaming for you?’

‘No. I’ve been in here, getting my morning tea.’ He poured in milk, gave it a stir, and slurped down his fresh cup in a matter of seconds. Smacking his lips together, he said, ‘Oh, I needed that, Annie. I’m very tense about all of this, I tell you. Very tense.’

‘Oh. Well, that’s understandable, but Hugo, I have to–’

‘I’m just worried what the Wayfarers will say when they find out,’ he said, cutting across me.

My curiosity was roused. ‘When they find out what?’

‘Oh dear.’ He pulled out his handkerchief and patted his forehead. ‘You see, I’ve just been reminded of something. There’s a reason I couldn’t hear you while I was making my tea. And … I might have just a little bit of fault in all of this, because I’m the reason Burt and Fee didn’t hear the kerfuffle the other day. If one of them had heard, they could have gone out and done something to help. The captain says Carlos died almost instantly, but still … that almost, Annie, it’s haunting me.’

‘How can it be your fault they didn’t hear? Fee said it was because they were busy watching TV.’

‘Yes. But a while back when we realised that Burt watches TV at a ridiculous volume, Fee suggested I put a muffler spell on the room, which … seems to have stuck.’

‘Oh, right,’ I said, digesting his words. How interesting. Had Fee really been concerned about Burt’s TV volume, or had she wanted to make sure Burt didn’t hear what was happening outside?

‘You should probably tell Captain Wood before she figures it out,’ I suggested. ‘Something tells me that woman doesn’t miss too much.’

‘You’re right. I’ll tell her, but I’m not looking forward to it – much as I admire her, she also scares the crap out of me. So, you were screaming for me, eh?’ He lifted a brow.

‘You are a lawsuit waiting to happen, you know that, don’t you?’

‘What? Oh, I see. I didn’t mean it like that, Annie. Get your mind out of the gutter. But why were you screaming for me, in a non-smutty way?’

‘Oh, dear goddess.’ I took a deep breath before launching into my explanation. When I got to the end, I said, ‘So you have to speak to Liam, straight away, because we need to know if the Animiser was taken from its crate at the college or if the theft happened after it arrived here.
